Even in the velvet black enveloping me
Soft inside the sheets,
Beaten with the blood of the world and waiting
To be lured away by rabbit dreams,
Your eyes glow in mine.
Out in the darkness tired meetings
Unfold meaninglessly, or perhaps
Just mourning slow, the loud calls
Echoing up the stairway to my corridor
Bringing that world back to breathe
Singing your own way in the dark.
These curves and hints of you, these peripheral
Paradises, offering a hand of light
In the midst of unfurling
Nightsea, their caress,
Their low, sleepy purr.
I will be with you many times
Before the sun rises to obscure
Your shadow; when
It burns my pale skin something warm.
And then you will be gone, forever,
Another black velvet cloud arrives
And covers me whole, suffocating.
